No News

Posted by Bridget Wheeler on Saturday, August 30, 2014,
Well, I'm still waiting on these two breeding pairs. There has been little to no breeding behaviors in either pair. Sadly you can bring a horse to water but you just can't make him drink. I have given the pairs the perfect breeding conditions but as many breeders know you can't always get your birds to breed. I'm sorry for the long wait but keep your fingers crossed.

And we wait

Posted by Bridget Wheeler on Saturday, June 14, 2014,
Oran has been singing and bobbing at Lena and she is finely letting him preen her. This is a great sign. She has accepted him as a mate. The pair still needs to spend time bonding but I think they will make a great pair. They are both still about a year old and neither of them has mated before. An estimate of how long it will take for them to lay their first clutch of chicks is about six months to a year. It can take a few clutches of eggs before a new pair fertilizes their eggs.

Changing it up

Posted by Bridget Wheeler on Monday, May 19, 2014,
Due to the slow nature of the past two breeding seasons I have decided to change my breeding pairs around. I now have two breeding pairs. The first being Henna and Eddy the second being Lena and Pete. I'm hoping I can get these birds to bond and breed soon. To all of you that have been waiting sorry for the wait. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

*** At the moment I am not taking any more budgie applications. ***

I am sorry for any inconvenience. If you would like to be taken off the waiting list please feel free to contact me. If not thank you for your patience.

A slow start to this breeding season

Posted by Bridget Wheeler on Thursday, November 14, 2013,
I checked Eddy and Auras eggs this morning and found none of them where fertile. It looks like we are off to a slow start. I have seem some breeding behaviors with Pete and Henna. They have been in and out of the nest for a few days now. I'm hoping a few of the other pairs will have better luck than Eddy and Aura.

Two new additions to the flock

Posted by Bridget Wheeler on Monday, November 4, 2013,
I have recently added two new additions to my flock. Oran is an American lutino male. Lena is an American albino female. I purchased them hoping they won't be split for any mutations. I'm hoping they are just normal inos. My plan is to diversify my lacewing gene pool. In a year or so I will pair them off with either lacewings or cinnamons.

And back to no eggs

Posted by Bridget Wheeler on Friday, October 11, 2013,
Sadly Aura threw her eggs out of the nest. This behavior usually occurs when a hen is going to lay a second clutch to close in time to her first. So we are back down to no eggs. I have placed Pete and Henna along with Athena and Otis in their breeding cages. Now we hope for more eggs.

Back to two pairs

Posted by Bridget Wheeler on Friday, August 30, 2013,
Quartz and Echo ended up laying 6 eggs. None of them where fertile. It was their first time breeding so this is usually expected. But Quartz is going to be a great hen. She sat on the eggs 24/7 starting the day she laid her first egg. Pete and Henna along with Athena and Otis are in there breeding cages. I'm hoping they will start laying soon.

Quartz and Echo starting the fall breeding season

Posted by Bridget Wheeler on Thursday, August 8, 2013,
Quartz is my very first American English mix lacewing female from Aura and Eddy. I bought a beautiful cinnamon violet male Echo for her mate. I wanted them to bond so I placed them into a breeding cage without a nest. They bonded very quickly and a couple days ago I found an egg on the bottom of the cage. Well that was their way of telling me it was time for a nest box. They now have four eggs. I will be keeping any normal males from them for my lacewing breeding program. If they need any ass...

Four chicks

Posted by Bridget Wheeler on Saturday, June 8, 2013,

Sadly one of the dark eyed chicks passed when it was a very young. Sometimes chicks pass when they have used all their energy getting out of the egg. On the up side the chicks are now five weeks old. The three girls are getting out of the nest frequently now. The lutino female is the only one that still needs help getting back into the nest. The male has stayed in the nest most of the time to stay away from the noise of his sisters. They are doing great and will be ready to go home in about t...

Eddy and Aura's chicks are all grown up. They had four chicks and their last egg was a dud. They had three cinnamon males, one grey/green and two greys. I have decided to keep their female chick in hopes she is a lacewing. She is showing light baring and light grey body color. Her name is Quartz and I'm planning on breeding her with my new arrival Echo. Echo is a cinnamon, violet english I recently bought.

Spring breeding season

Well it must almost be spring because the boys are flirting up a storm. So I put my four remaining pairs in their breeding cages. yesterday Eddy and Aura started off the pack early. They are now on their second clutch and have four chicks and one egg. Their second chick has red eyes and I'm hoping for my first lacewing. She decided i would be fun to fly around my room today. The adopted eggs where all duds and where tossed out. Here is a photo of the chicks.

This way they have time to bond before the rest of the flock starts to breed.

Now that I have slimed the flock down a bit all six pairs can breed at once. This season I'm going to be introducing one new breeding pair Ze...

Dusty and Bell's nest
Otis and Athena's chick is starting to perch on the inside rim of the nest box when it wants to be fed. It looks like their chick's mutation will be Sky blue, spangle, dominant pied. She is also taking care of six of her own chicks. The two oldest look like they are going to be recessive pieds but I'm not sure about the other ones. We will have to wait and see.

Otis and Athena's nest

Their chick has been rehomed again in Bell's nest.

The eggs that where in Violet's nest where all duds. After I took the bad eggs out she started pecking Otis and Athena's chick. So I rehomed it again to Bell's nest.

Bell is sitting on four chicks so far along with Otis and Athena's chick. They also have three eggs.

Otis and Athena's nest

Zeus and Violet's nest
Violet is sitting on six of her eggs and four of Athena and Otis's eggs. Athena and Otis's first chick is getting big. It's eyes are now open and it's starting to get its pin feathers in. One of the eggs has hatched and the oldest chick is so m...

Half sider very rare chick

Posted by Bridget Wheeler on Monday, November 7, 2011,
I wished for lacewings and got a half sider! I read up on the coloration and found that half siders aren't a true mutation but a development condition. It is thought that twins merge very early in development. They can have two different mutations on each side being split down the middle or can have splotches of different mutations through out the body. They are also thought to be infertile. This is a very rare condition.

Back to eleven chicks

Posted by Bridget Wheeler on Sunday, October 16, 2011,
Some of you may know I have been having a problem with a couple of the chicks. Sadly two of the chicks have ruptured their air sacks. This can happen when the male doesn't actually have any food digested to feed the chicks and feeds the chick air. The first chick died but the second is still making it. I have gotten the air out from under its skin so hopefully the second chick will make it.

Zeus and Violet's nest
Violet is still taking great care of Otis and Athena's chick. I have also put Athena and Otis's last egg in Violet's nest. I listened to the egg this morning and it was trying to pick through the egg. Violet's last three eggs where over due and where duds so I took them out of the nest. I have also figured out who Violet bred with to have the yellow chick. The yellow chick looks like a dominant pied green grey wing. And the only green male that is split for grey wing is ...

Growing chicks

I have a sticky note on every nest with the lay date hatch date and color of each chick. If I end up moving chicks around I keep note of that as well.

Zeus and Violet's yellow chick is doing great in Bell and Dusty's nest. Violet is also taking very good care of Athena and Otis's chick. It looks huge even though it isn't even a week old yet. It is going to be one big baby.

Otis and Athena's nest has two eggs still but one looks dark. So hopefully it will be hatching soon.

Updates

Posted by Bridget Wheeler on Tuesday, October 4, 2011,

I took a good look at Zeus and Violet's chick and the chick has yellow pin feathers. It looks like Violet had been fooling around with one of the green/yellow males before I put her in the breeding cage. Because neither Zeus or Violet have green/yellow genes.

I have decided to move some of the chicks around so the highest number of chicks will survive. Sadly Athena and Otis's first chick got out of the egg but it didn't survive. Athena and Otis's second chick hatched today. I have decided to p...

One more chick three less eggs

Posted by Bridget Wheeler on Friday, September 30, 2011,
Well here is where the good and the bad parts of breeding budgies can be summed up in one day. Petey and Stella's second chick hatched today. The chicks eyes are dark, so my guess is it's a normal male or female, maybe green or blue can't tell yet. The bad news is Ginger decided to crack all three of her eggs. She hasn't been sitting on them so she may have known something was wrong with them from the start. Or maybe she just didn't want to raise any chicks just yet. Either way there should b...

Second chick

Posted by Bridget Wheeler on Wednesday, September 28, 2011,
Petey and Stella's first egg hatched this morning. It looks like the chicks eyes are red. This could be the first lacewing bred at the aviary or it could be an ino (albino or lutino) chick. Either way this chick is a female. Zeus and Violet's chick is growing fast. I always say it seems like you could watch them grow the first weeks of their lives. I think it has already tripled in size.

Round two here comes summer

Posted by Bridget Wheeler on Friday, June 17, 2011,
We are well into the second round of chicks during the spring going into summer season.

Violet and Zeus ended up with two female chicks. One albino that I’m keeping. Her name is Ruby and the other chick is a dominant pied, recessive pied, blue violet. Both chicks had to be placed with foster hens because Violet started to peck them as soon as their adult feathers started to grow in.

And they didn’t stop there. They soon laid another clutch of five chicks. And like the first clutch Vio...

All of the chicks are able to get in and out the their nest boxes and feed themselves. Just a couple more weeks and they will all be ready to fly the coop. Horus and Ginger have started to lay their second clutch. I'm not sure how many are fertile yet. I wait until the last egg is five days old before I candle them. I will get more photos up soon.

Plucking problem

Posted by Bridget Wheeler on Friday, April 15, 2011,
I checked the chicks over yesterday when I got home and found something I have never had a problem with before. Violet started to pluck one of her chicks feathers. The pore little thing hardly has any feathers on it's back on the back of it's head and under one wing. It's a couple days shy of a month old. She has pulled the chicks adult feathers out along with the chick down. I put the chick and it's sibling in with two of my other breeding hens, Stella and Ginger. They both are doing fine in...

Willow and Violet have a little surprise for me. Their first chick opened her eyes and they are red! Since Willow isn't split for ino Violet must have bred with either Zeus or Otis before I put her in the breeding cage. Because of the way albino works the chick must be a female. Chicks colors

Posted by Bridget Wheeler on Tuesday, August 10, 2010,
I can see what colors the chicks are now and I'm excited to say I have a few surprises...

#1 Lutino
#2 Yellow pied I think it's recessive but we will see once he grows a little more.
#3 Albino
#4 Lutino
#5 Normal green

It depends on the type of pied. But I think it's recessive so that means both Horus and Ginger are split for recessive pied. I also have one albino chick. This means that both Hours and Ginger are split for blue as well.

Eggs and chicks

Posted by Bridget Wheeler on Sunday, August 1, 2010,
Well there are a lot of eggs here that's for sure. Storm and Willow have two eggs. Prince and Violet have five eggs. Apollo and Liberty have one. Horus and Ginger have five little chicks that are growing fast. They have three lutino females and two green males. they did have three males but sadly the youngest passed away yesterday. This happens because the parents instinctually feed the strongest chicks and sometimes the smallest just don't survive.

Eggs eggs and more chicks

Posted by Bridget Wheeler on Tuesday, July 27, 2010,
The aviary is filling up fast. Prince and Violet are now laying eggs. They have two. Willow and Storm also now have two eggs. Horus and Ginger still have four eggs to go. Their latest chick is a lutino female. I have a feeling I'm going to have my hands full feeding chicks this season. The birds don't usually have a summer breeding season but I think all of the humidity and hot temps followed by thunderstorms helped.

Two little chicks

Posted by Bridget Wheeler on Monday, July 26, 2010,
The second chick hatched today. The first is defiantly a female. And the second is a male. All the females will be lutino (yellow with red eyes) and all of the males will be normal green. I can now see the stark contrast between the two chicks because of their eye color.

First Chick

Ginger and Horus's eggs

Posted by Bridget Wheeler on Thursday, July 22, 2010,
Well it looks like we are going to have some chicks if everything goes as planed. All of the eggs are fertile. I put three of the eggs in Storm and Willows nest box. They have started showing signs of breeding and Storm has a large vent so she should be laying any day now. I figured Storm has raised multiple clutches so she knows what she is doing. I thought that would give the first time parents a break. Ginger didn't like it but she got over it in a few minutes. Storm has been sitting on th...

Horus and Ginger

I have been talking a lot about breeding lacewings in the future. So I did a lot of research and asked a lot of questions. I decided to pair up my lutino male Horus and my olive green cinnamon female Ginger to start off. Well I put them in one of my breeding cages a couple weeks ago. They had just finished their molt so I thought it would be a great time to see if they would bond or not. Well they have bonded alright. I have seen Ginger going in and out of her nest a lot lately. New goal (Lacewing mutation)

Posted by Bridget Wheeler on Thursday, July 1, 2010,
As I have said in prier posts, I am setting a new goal for the aviary. I would like to breed the lacewing mutation. Lacewing Is a mix either albino or lutino and cinnamon. If you have mixed an albino and cinnamon the bird will have an all white body and light brown head and wing markings. If you mix lutino and cinnamon the bird will have yellow body color and light brown head and wing markings. In both types the cheek patches show up violet. Both also have red eyes. Chick update

All six chicks are doing well. They are starting to eat on their own. They all know how to get in and out of the nests but seem to be more content out sitting with their parents. I have decided to keep the opaline cinnamon yellow face type two hen. In the future I would like to breed lacewings. The lacewing mutation is a mix between ino (albino or lutino) and cinnamon. The result is a yellow or white bird with red eyes and brown wing markings. Some lacewings even have color on their bodys as ...

Chicks

Another one of Grace and Apollo's chicks passed soon after hatching. They only have two and they seem to be doing great. I think the problem was the age difference between the two oldest chicks and the two youngest. They where about a week apart and hens always feed the largest and strongest chicks first. The oldest chick looks like it's going to be normal green. The second one is going to be dominant pied green.

The cinnamon gere is sex-linked. This means the male passes on the gene. Females when bred to normal males will pass the gene on to their male chicks. The male chicks will appear...

One of Jazz and Grace's eggs hatched yesterday. I looked at the other eggs and it seems like they have dried out. This typically happens when the air is dry. The membrane on the inside of the egg can dry out, the egg shell also can dry out. This condition can cause the babies to die in the egg. Babies can also die as they try to breakout of the egg. Babies that hatch can also die shortly after hatching because of exhaustion.  The egg shell might be to hard for them to break through. The only ...
