Spring breeding season

March 6, 2013

Well it must almost be spring because the boys are flirting up a storm. So I put my four remaining pairs in their breeding cages. yesterday Eddy and Aura started off the pack early. They are now on their second clutch and have four chicks and one egg. Their second chick has red eyes and I'm hoping for my first lacewing. Otis and Athena and Billy and Annie have been bonded and have had chicks prior to this season. It usually doesn't take long for them to get into the nest boxes. Then there is my wild card pair Zazu and Zira. I just adopted them about a month or so ago. They haven't bred before and they aren't a bonded pair yet. Their chicks should be florescent both are very brightly colored. Lastly Pete is an experienced male and has fathered many of my chicks. Henna is one of the chicks I raised form a chick and I'm hoping they will become another pair that will produce lacewings for me. The waiting game begins. It will be a couple weeks before the chicks show off their true colors and about a month or so until I expect more eggs. Here we go again.

Four chicks and one egg

Aura and Eddy's second clutch

February 22, 2013
Aura and Eddy now have five eggs. I checked them tonight and one of them has a grey line around it. That little grey line marks the long journey the tiny chick inside will take. It takes the chick a couple days to break through the shell. I'm still hoping for a lacewing. Heres to crossing my fingers and toes.

Growing up

January 17, 2013
Aura and Eddy's chicks are doing great! The two oldest chicks are getting in and out of the nest. I'm guessing they will be starting to wean the chicks soon. I clipped the oldest chicks wings. She decided i would be fun to fly around my room today. The adopted eggs where all duds and where tossed out. Here is a photo of the chicks.

6 chicks and one egg

November 25, 2012
I have put my new hen Aura in with Eddy hoping for some lacewings. I just bought Aura maybe a month or so ago. I wasn't expecting the pair to bond so quickly. A couple days ago Aura started to get in and out of the nest. I thought she was just checking it out maybe not ever seeing a nest before. But I was wrong she was getting ready to lay her first clutch. She has laid one egg and Eddy has started feeding her.

As for Billy and Annies chicks. The oldest chick is starting to get out of he nest...
